African champions, Nigeria Super Falcons, will face Comoros in the second round of the African qualifiers for the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, www.aclsports.com reports.
Comoros secured their place in the second round after recording a historic 30-0 aggregate victory over Sudan in the opening phase of the qualifiers. The Coelacanths took a huge step towards progression with a 17-0 triumph in Morocco on 4 June, the biggest win ever registered by the national team, with Holoua Ahamada netting four times. They followed that performance with another commanding display four days later, running out 13-0 winners to complete the rout and set up a clash with Nigeria.
Nigeria, alongside fellow continental heavyweights South Africa and Ghana, received a bye into the second round and will commence their qualification campaign in October. The Super Falcons and Comoros are scheduled to meet over two legs between 5 and 13 October 2026.
The African qualification series will be contested across five rounds, with only two teams securing places at the women’s football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The final round is scheduled for November and December 2027, when Africa’s representatives will be decided.
Should Nigeria overcome Comoros, they will face either Congo or Morocco in the third round, which is slated for February and March 2027. A successful outcome could then set up a fourth-round meeting against one of Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic or Mali as the race for Olympic qualification intensifies.
Having returned to Olympic football at Paris 2024 after a 16-year absence, the Super Falcons will be eager to secure another appearance on the global stage as they look to navigate another demanding qualification route. Nigeria’s best Olympic campaign remains their quarter-final finish at Athens 2004.
