One of the undercover journalists who contributed to ‘Number 12’, an investigative documentary that rocked Ghanaian and African football last year, was shot dead in Accra late Wednesday.
Ahmed Hussein Suale was rushing home after receiving news of his sick daughter when armed men fired at him through the side window of his car, according to another member of Tiger Eye Private Investigations which produced the documentary which was aired in Ghana last June.
“Ahmed was rushing home around 11 pm (Ghanaian time) after news that his daughter was sick and was shot through his car window, with two bullets hitting his chest and one hitting his neck,” Sammy Darko told a local radio station on Thursday.
“The Police are still investigating the crime scene and will come out with more details.”
The Tiger Eye Private Investigations team, led by renowned Ghanaian journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas, reported of threats on its members after the filmed was made public.
“After ‘Number 12’, there were a lot of threats against the lives of members of Tiger Eye PI, including Anas. They weren’t taken lightly and security measures were put in place,” Darko said.
“The death threats against members of the team were reported to the police and adequate security measures were taken.
“Ahmed was a very good undercover journalist and very experienced, and did his work with a lot of precision. He did extensive work on the Kwesi Nyantakyi exposé.”
The exposé led to the resignation Ghana Football Association president Kwesi Nyantakyi who was caught on camera taking bribes. The former CAF first vice president and member FIFA Executive Committee has been handed a life ban from football.
More than 70 referees from 15 African countries were exposed in the film involved in corrupt practices to influence match results.
All football-related activities in Ghana have been suspended since June in the wake of the documentary.
Nigeria’s home-based team coach Salisu Yusuf was also shown taking cash from agents to influence player selection at the 2017 Wafu Cup of Nations in Ghana.
He has been fined and banned for a year.
