Super Falcons midfielder Deborah Abiodun has signed a new contract with Washington Spirit, extending her stay at the NWSL club until 2028, with an option for a further year, www.aclsports.com reports.

Washington Spirit announced the extension on Thursday, October 22, 2026, securing Abiodun’s future with the club after an eventful spell since her arrival.

The 22-year-old joined in January 2025 from the University of Pittsburgh and briefly spent time on loan at Dallas Trinity FC before returning to Washington in August 2025. She went on to help the Spirit reach the NWSL Championship and has since made 21 appearances for the club, scoring one goal and providing one assist.

Before moving to the United States, she played for Rivers Angels in the NWFL. During her two seasons at Pittsburgh, she recorded 10 goals and three assists in 34 appearances and earned All-ACC honours in both seasons, including Second Team recognition in 2024.

At international level, Abiodun made her senior debut for Nigeria in September 2022 and has represented the Super Falcons at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympic Games and the 2024 and 2026 WAFCON. She was part of the squad that won Nigeria’s 10th continental title at the 2024 WAFCON.

The midfielder is recovering from a hip injury that ended her 2026 season prematurely. She underwent surgery in September after being placed on the club’s season-ending injury list.

Speaking after agreeing to the extension, Abiodun expressed her delight at continuing with the club.

“The Spirit has become my home over the past year and I’m thrilled to renew my commitment to DC,” she said. “I have seen a lot of growth in my game with this club and I look forward to continuing to contribute to its success over the next three seasons.”
