Handball: Nigerian Teams off to Morocco for CAHB Africa Nations Cup

IHF continental champion, Nigeria departed the country via  Air Maroc early Thursday morning to Marrakech for 2018 CAHB Africa Men’s Junior and Youth Championships.

The CAHB Junior Championship will hold from 7th to 14th September 2018 while the Youth Championship will follow immediately from 15th to 22nd September.

Nigeria is been drawn in group A of the competition alongside Tunisia, Algeria and Angola which is seen as the group of death in the Youth category, while Nigeria faces Egypt, Algeria, Guinea and Libya in the group B of the Junior category.

Both the team officials and players are in high spirits for the championship and hope to replicate their performance in Kigali, Rwanda.

Nigeria won the youth and junior editions of the CAHB Africa IHF Trophy in Kigali, Rwanda, a few days after the draw, Nigeria qualified through to Morocco in both competitions.

The first CAHB African Men’s Junior Championship took place back in 1980, in Lagos, Nigeria, and the 2018 edition will be the 19th edition of the event in which Egypt are the record winners, with 11 championship wins.

The current title holders are Tunisia, who beat Egypt 30:29 in Bamako, Mali in 2016.

The top three teams in each championship will qualify through to the IHF Men’s Youth and Junior World Championships next year.

Junior Championship

Ten teams will participate, initially in two preliminary groups:

Group A: Tunisia (TUN), Algeria (ALG), Angola (ANG), Nigeria (NGR), Zambia (ZAM)

Group B: Egypt (EGY), Morocco (MAR), DR Congo (COD), Guinea (GUI), Sierra Leone (SLE)

 

Youth Championship

Ten teams will also compete at the youth level:

Group A: Tunisia (TUN), DR Congo (COD), Morocco (MAR), Mauritania (MTN) and Zambia (ZAM).

Group B features Egypt (EGY), Algeria (ALG), Guinea (GUI), Libya (LBA) and Nigeria (NGR)
