Goodness Nwachukwu broke the world record to win gold in the women’s discus throw on Day 6 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, www.aclsports.com reports.
Nwachukwu produced a final-round throw of 39.66m to claim the Commonwealth title and improve her own F42 world record by more than three metres. She had previously set the record while winning gold at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games before raising the mark again in Glasgow.
Her record-breaking effort placed her ahead of Wales’ Funmi Oduwaiye, who finished second with 38.52m, while Bree Cronin completed the podium with a 36.00m throw.
Jessica Oji added another medal for Team Nigeria after securing silver in the women’s shot put on her international debut. The 19-year-old recorded a best throw of 17.87m to become the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games shot put medal since Vivian Chukwuemeka claimed silver at Melbourne 2006.
In the men’s shot put, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi progressed to the final after his opening attempt reached 20.03m, which was enough to meet the qualification requirement.
On the track, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka began her Commonwealth Games campaign with a victory in the women’s 200m heats, clocking a personal best time of 23.26 seconds. Olayinka Olajide also advanced to the semi-finals after finishing third in her heat with a time of 23.62 seconds.
In the men’s 200m, Udodi Onwuzurike progressed after winning his heat in 20.31 seconds, which was the second-fastest time recorded in the qualifying rounds. However, Alaba Akintola missed out on the semi-finals despite finishing third in his heat, with his 20.96-second run not enough to rank among the fastest qualifiers.
Ezekiel Nathaniel secured his place in the men’s 400m hurdles final after winning his heat in 48.69 seconds, the fastest qualifying time of the event.
Blessing Orakwe’s women’s 70kg boxing campaign ended in the quarter-finals after she suffered a narrow 3-2 split-decision defeat to Australia’s Lekeisha Pergoliti. She won two of the five judges’ scorecards, but Pergoliti advanced to the semi-finals.
At the end of Day 6, Team Nigeria remained fifth on the Commonwealth Games medal table with 14 medals, comprising seven gold, five silver and two bronze.
