Aliyu Sugau has continued to make steady progress at Barau FC, combining consistency and confidence as he continues to get mentioned among the NPFL’s exciting right-backs.
Carrying his form from last season into the current campaign, the defender is now enjoying another milestone in his career following his invitation to the Nigeria U23 Olympic Eagles, an opportunity he hopes to use as a springboard for further growth.
“I am growing, and I carried last season’s performance into this one. However, it is the fans who can rate my performance in this current season,” Sugau, who has started every game for Barau this season, said to www.aclsports.com when asked about his recent form.
His comments come as Barau FC continue to establish themselves in the Nigerian top flight. The Kano-based side finished eighth in their debut NPFL campaign last season and have started the new campaign on a fine note.
The Maliya Boys began the 2026/27 campaign with a convincing 3-1 victory over Nasarawa United before securing a goalless draw against Kun Khalifat FC and beating Ranchers Bees 3-1. They picked up draws against Lagos sides – Ikorodu City and Sporting Lagos before suffering a shock 4-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance.

Barau subsequently drew 2-2 with defending champions Rangers International at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, then drew against Rivers United and Kwara United, demonstrating their ability to compete against established sides in the division. After ten matches into the new season, they sit fifth on the log, just two points behind top spot.
For the right-back, the club’s collective ambition is clear. “Our target is to win the league,” Sugau said.
Beyond his club responsibilities, the defender is also relishing his invitation to the Nigeria U23 side (the Olympic Eagles), describing the call-up as a source of considerable happiness.
“The day I got the call-up to the [U23 Olympic Eagles], I was very happy. I am so happy at the moment,” he added.
In terms of his style of play, Sugau responded, “With the way I play football, some call me [Dani] Carvajal, while others call me [Achraf] Hakimi. I just want to keep getting better and make a name for myself”
For now, Sugau’s immediate focus remains on helping Barau FC achieve their objectives while taking advantage of the opportunity presented by his U23 Olympic Eagles invitation.
