Nigeria U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, defeated Niger 5-0 in their 2026 WAFU B U17 Girls Cup opener on Wednesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Two first-half goals and three after the break secured a convincing 5-0 victory for the Flamingos at Lycée Scientifique, Yamoussoukro.
Nigeria broke the deadlock in the 16th minute when Sakirat Sarafa crossed from the right for captain Chidi Harmony to meet it with a well-timed run and fire home with her right foot.
They doubled their lead in the 35th minute after a mistake by the Niger goalkeeper. Oluwakemi Adegbuyi’s shot was blocked, but Awawu Bashiru pounced on the rebound. Adegbuyi had a goal ruled out in the 42nd minute as the Flamingos went into half-time with a 2-0 lead.
The Flamingos continued to control the game after the break but had to wait until the 83rd minute to add to their tally, with Ohunene Sunday heading home at the back post from a free-kick.
Two more goals followed in the closing stages as substitute Destiny Itobore delivered a fine cross for Mary Dunstan to head home a minute later before Ayomide Rotimi completed the scoring in the fourth minute of added time, pouncing after Niger failed to clear a short corner.
Nigeria will face Ghana in their next match on Saturday, with the Black Maidens securing a 4-0 victory over Burkina Faso in their opening game.
