Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 700th career goal on Monday evening as Portugal lost to Ukraine who sealed a place in next year’s European Championships.
After going two goals down away in Kyiv, a 72nd minute Ronaldo penalty looked to rejuvenate the reigning European Champions as they tried to snatch a draw but the Ukrainians defended well to clinch all three points and soil the Juventus forwards big day.
This result means that the Shevchenko led Ukraine team have joined the likes of Belgium and Italy in booking their place in the 2020 edition of the European Championships.
Elsewhere, England recorded a big away win against Bulgaria defeating them 6-0 following the loss to Czech Republic – their first loss in the European qualifiers in about a decade.
Gareth Southgate rang the changes with Tyrone Mings making his debut in the heart of defence with Harry Maguire as Fikayo Tomori was once again left on the bench. Unlike his Chelsea team mate Tammy Abraham who featured for 3 minutes against Czech Republic; the centre back is still eligible to play for Nigeria having failed to be used for any of the two games.
Ross Barkley and Raheem Sterling both scored a brace after Marcus Rashford had given the Three Lions the lead. Harry Kane then rounded up proceedings after an impressive performance which saw him assist three of the other five goals scored.
