Rivers United booked their spot in the last eight of the CAF Confed Cup in dramatic fashion at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Sunday. The Pride of Rivers, who needed a late goal from defender Kazie Enyinnaya, reached the quarterfinals of the competition for the second consecutive season.
For finishing second in the group by goal difference behind Dreams FC of Ghana, the 2022 Nigerian champions will face one of the other three group winners in the competition. Rivers United’s potential opponents are USM Alger (Algeria), Zamalek (Egypt), or 2021/22 winners RS Berkane (Morocco).
United will host the first leg in Uyo on March 31, 2024, before travelling away for the concluding part of the tie some days later.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s hopes of retaining the 12th place in the CAF League rankings – which has four continental slots (two CAFCL & two CAFCC) – for another season hinges on United’s deep run in this competition or the failure of Stade Malien (Mali) and Dreams (Ghana) to outdo them.
