Asaba 2018: Team Nigeria win 7 medals on day 3

Team Nigeria claimed a total of seven medals on day 3 of the 21st African Athletics Championship at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba on Friday. Nigeria took 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 2 Bronze to increase their medal tally to 11.

2014 Commonwealth champion, Ese Brume equalled her season’s best of 6:83m to claim the Gold medal in the Women’s Long Jump. Brume had previously won Gold in Marrakesh and Durban in 2014 and 2016.

It was a 1-2 win for Nigeria in the Women’s Discus Throw final as Chioma Onyekwere improved her Bronze medal win two years ago in Durban to win Gold with a mark of 58.09m in Asaba.

Her compatriot, Chinwe Okoro took the silver with her best mark of 57.37m in her third attempt.

In the 400m Men’s final, Chidi Okezie made it back to back Bronze medal at the African Athletics Championship. He also came third in the 2016 African Athletics Championship in Durban, South Africa.

National 400 meters champion, Yinka Ajayi also took Bronze in the 400m Women’s final in a time of 51.34 secs.

Team Nigeria 4×100 relay Men and Women were also in brillaint form taking the Silver and Gold respectively.

The quartet of Joy Udo-Gabriel, Blessing Okagbare-Ighoteguonor, Oluwatobiloba Amusan and Rosemary Chukwuma finished first in 43.77 secs. While the Men’s relay team took Silver in 38.74 secs behind South Africa.

Team Nigeria Women will represent Team Africa at the IAAF Continental Cup in Ostrava next month for winning the Women’s 4x100m Relay at the CAA African Senior Championship.
