Following a dismal outing in the last international window where the Super Eagles started their 2026 World Cup qualifiers on a poor note, the side, led by Austin Eguavoen, will kick off their AFCON qualifiers this weekend with the need to get all three points against familiar opposition in Gernot Rohr-led Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

It will be recalled that the former African champions reached the final of the last continental showpiece in Cote d’Ivoire, where they lost to the hosts. The journey for a place in the next edition in Morocco starts this Saturday.

Nigeria interim head coach Austin Eguavoen knows it will be a difficult game as Benin defeated the side just some months ago in the World Cup Qualifiers but believes the players are aware of the task at hand.

Until the defeat in June, Nigeria have always been the better side against the Cheetahs and will need to find that form again once more to appease their fans.

Two days before the clash, all the invited players took part in the full training session with Victor Osimhen, who just completed a move to Turkey, being the last to arrive after a tough summer transfer window for the Africa Player of the Year.

Nigeria vs Benin Republic referees

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has selected Egyptian official Amin Mohamed Omar to officiate the match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Cheetahs of Benin Republic.

Omar will be joined by fellow countrymen Mahmoud Abouelregal (Assistant Referee 1), Ahmad Hossam Taha (Assistant Referee 2), and Ahmed ElGhandour (Fourth Official).
