Commonwealth Games 2026: Nigeria to compete in 10 sports, unveils athletes

Nigeria will compete in 10 sports at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with the athletes who will represent the country being unveiled, www.aclsports.com reports.

The Games will take place from 23 July to 2 August 2026, with competitions held across four venues and featuring events in 10 sports, including six Para sports.

Nigeria will compete in 3×3 basketball, 3×3 wheelchair basketball, athletics, boxing, judo, para athletics, para powerlifting, swimming, track cycling and weightlifting.

The Nigerian contingent has completed its training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, and has now settled into the Games Village ahead of the competition.

World record holder Tobi Amusan and Team Nigeria captain Folashade Oluwafemiayo will lead the challenge, with both athletes bringing Commonwealth Games titles and a wealth of medal-winning experience.

The participating teams in the various sports are:

Athletics: The athletics team includes Tobi Amusan, Temitope Adeshina, Ruth Usoro, Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma, Patience Okon George, Rosemary Nwankwo, Esther Joseph, Blessing Ogundiran, Jessica Oji, Olayinka Olajide, Oyesade Olatoye, Prestina Ochonogor, Miracle Ezechukwu, Favour Onyah and Obiageri Amaechi in the women’s event. The men’s team features Kanyinsola Ajayi, Alaba Akintola, Favour Ashe, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Chidera Ezeakor, Ezekiel Nathaniel, Samuel Ogazi, Israel Okon, Udodi Onwuzurike, Edidiong Udo, Adekalu Fakorede, Jami Schlueter and Chinecherem Nnamdi.

Boxing: The women’s team includes Kadijat Ajishola, Patricia Mbata and Blessing Oraekwe. The men’s team features Abdulramon Abdulwahab, Ayomide Foly and David Akintola.

Weightlifting: The Nigerian weightlifting team includes Ruth Ayodele, Onome Didih, Rafiatu Lawal, Ruth Nyong and Mary Osijo in the women’s event. The men’s team features Favour Agboro, Adedapo Opadeji and Edidiong Umoafia.

Para powerlifting: The women’s team includes Rita Ferdinand, Esther Nworgu, Alice Owolabi-Oluwafemiayo and Esther Oyema, while the men’s team features Riluwan Idris, Ibrahim Dauda and Roland Ezurulike.

Para athletics: The women’s team includes Destiny Agbo, Eucharia Iyiazi, Goodness Nwachukwu and Christopher Uwak, while the men’s team features Ifeanyi Christian.

3×3 basketball: The men’s team features Marcel Esonwune, Ikechukwu Sean Nwamu, Esosa Okundaye and Robert Ukawuba.

3×3 wheelchair basketball: The women’s team includes Nofisat Adefala, Gbemisola Ijigbamigbe, Chituru Nwaozuzu and Titilayo Olaleye.

Swimming: The women’s team includes Dorcas Oka, while the men’s team features Abduljabar Adama, Colins Obi Ebingha and Clinton Opute.

Judo: The women’s team includes Enku Ekuta, while the men’s team features Michael Agbo, Kehinde Aremu and Taiwo Aremu.

Track cycling: The men’s team features Oyindamola Tijani.

The opening ceremony will take place on 23 July, with the Games’ sporting programme getting fully underway on 24 July. The closing ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, 2 August.

Nigeria will be aiming to make a strong impact at the event and improve on its performance at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where the country won 35 medals, including 12 gold, nine silver and 14 bronze.
