Former top football stars will on Thursday evening take on Nigeria Professional Football League side Kano Pillars in a novelty match designed to raise funds for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) especially in Northern Nigeria.
Former Nigerian World Cup stars Kanu Nwankwo, Samson Siasia, Daniel Amokachi, Tijani Babangida, Mutiu Adepoju and Garba Lawal were all part of Thursday morning’s training session at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Kano, venue of the evening match.
Also in the morning training were former African stars Benjani Mwaruwaru of Zimbabwe and South African Fabian McCarthy while Nigerian league coaches Kennedy Boboye and Manu Garba were also in the mix amongst other retired footballers.
Senegalese star El Hadji Diouf who missed the session is also expected to be part of the game.
A lot of people have been rendered homeless since the start of terrorist activities of the Boko Haram sect in Northern Nigeria some eight years ago and have had to make do with living in camps across the country.
Thursday’s game is hoped to be a way of giving back to the unfortunate ones with all gate takings expected to go into the funding of the IDPs as well as raising of funds for the same cause.
