Venus Williams beat Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza to advance to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals in Singapore.

The 37 year old, beat the Spaniard 7-5 6-4 to avenge her Wimbledon final loss and secure second place in the White Group behind Karolina Pliskova.

A win would have seen any if the two players qualify for the last four as they both held identical 1-1 records in White Group at the season-ending event but Williams did enough to progress to the next round.

Pliakova, who won her first two matches ended the round-robin with a 6-3 6-1 defeat by Jelena Ostapenko earlier on Thursday. Williams will play Caroline Wozniacki or Caroline Garcia in the semis.
