World number one Simona Halep and sixth seed Caroline Wozniacki both had impressive victories in their opening round-robin matches at the WTA Finals in Singapore on Monday.

Halep, playing her first match since emerging as the top ranked payer, beat France’s Caroline Garcia 6-4 6-2 in the first Red Group match on day two in 1hour 28 minutes.

Her fourth straight appearance in Singapore, the world number 1 revenged her loss to Garcia two weeks after the world number 8 beat her in the China Open final ending the French woman’s 11-match winning streak in straight sets.

Wozniacki making her fifth appearance at the year-ending eight-player event, started her WTA final campaign demolishing Elina Svitolina 6-2 6-0 in their WTA Finals opener on Monday.

It was the first time the Dane defeated Svitolina who was uninspiring, struggling on her debut in Singapore. Wozniacki struck 16 winners and just five unforced errors against Svitolina, who hit 10 winners and 18 unforced errors to earn her first victory in Singapore in just 58 minutes.

Day 3 of the WTA finals will see Venus Williams play Jelena Ostapenko in the White Group at 12:30 pm on Tuesday, followed by Wimbledon champion Garbiñe Muguruza against third seed Karolina Pliskova.
