The Falconets progressed into the quarter-final of the ongoing FIFA U20WWC on Monday morning, courtesy of Esther Onyenezide’s strike.

Again, the weather was a problem as kick-off was delayed by an hour due to a water logged pitch but the game eventually kicked-off, and just like their first game against France Nigeria’s Falconets left it late to claim a 1-0 victory over Korea Republic.

It was FC Robo of Lagos’ Esther Onyenezide who riffled a curling effort in the 83rd minute beyond the Korea Republic keeper in goal, to secure all three points for Nigeria and ensure the team’s passage into the next stage of the competition.

The girls toiled all game and held on till the final minute after the late breakthrough to seal a qarter-final spot.

As it stands, Nigeria tops Group C with six points from two games, while Korea Republic remain second with three points from their 2-0 opening match victory over Canada. France stay third with zero points an a -1 goal difference, while Canada are bottom with no point and a -2 goals difference.

The Falconets will complete their group stage campaign against Canada on Thursday as they look to maintain 100% winning record into the knockout phase.
