Nigeria U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, defeated Puerto Rico 2–0 to secure their first win at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
First-half and stoppage-time goals from Oluwakemi Adegbuyi and Precious Oscar secured the victory for Nigeria in their second Group B match at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Morocco.
Head coach Akeem Busari made one change to the side that lost 2–1 to Poland, with Rodiat Yusuf replacing Elizabeth Adesuyi in the starting line-up.
Nigeria started brightly and created early chances before taking the lead in the 25th minute. Adegbuyi opened the scoring after her initial effort, following a pass from Queen Joseph, was blocked, allowing her to fire the rebound past Puerto Rico goalkeeper Victoria Moore-Torres.
The Flamingos continued to search for a second goal, while Puerto Rico pushed for an equaliser. However, Nigeria maintained their advantage to go into the half-time break leading 1–0.
Puerto Rico continued to push for an equaliser after the restart, but Nigeria remained dangerous going forward. Busari made three substitutions, introducing Precious Oscar, Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku for Queen Joseph, Mary Dunstan and Chidera Chidi, respectively.
The Flamingos sealed the victory in stoppage time as substitutes Umejiaku and Oscar combined for Nigeria’s second goal, with Oscar heading home Umejiaku’s assist in the 90+3rd minute.
The Flamingos will face defending champions DPR Korea in their final Group B match on October 23 as they look to secure a place in the knockout stage.
