Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has doled out N12.5 million cash to the victorious national female basketball team, D’Tigress, on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Buhari, hosting the team at the Council Chamber prior to the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting, said: “I am pleased to receive our female National Basketball Team, D’Tigress, at the State House today. They have done so much to make us proud. The entire nation appreciates and celebrates your victory, the first in 12 years and qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Spain.”

The president announced that each player would home with N1 million while team officials get N500,000. 12 players went for the tournament.

A delighted President Buhari thanked the team for emerging victorious at the Afrobasket and also qualifying for the FIBA Women’s World Cup in Spain next year.

The team captain, Aisha Mohammed, appreciated the President for his warm reception and pledged to do well in Spain next year.

“This is will motivate us to do more by the grace of God. We feel overjoyed that the President invited us to come here. We are excited.

“We promise to give Nigeria more victories and by the grace of God we will go to Spain and win,” she assured.

D’Tigress won the 2017 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Mali and qualified for the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain.
