Federal University of Technology Minna (FUTMINNA) were crowned male football champions after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ekiti State University (EKSU) in the final at the University of Jos (UNIJOS) on Friday, www.aclsports.com reports.
A late goal from FUTMINNA was enough to secure the win, while EKSU settled for silver and Kaduna State University (KASU) claimed bronze, capping off an exciting male football tournament.
Drama off the pitch reshaped the women’s football final. UNILAG were originally set to face hosts UNIJOS, but Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) successfully protested their semifinal loss, alleging that UNIJOS fielded ineligible players. Following the panel’s ruling in FUOYE’s favour, the women’s final will now feature UNILAG versus FUOYE.
Athletics continued to deliver excitement across multiple events. Kwara State University claimed gold in the Mixed 4x100m relay, with Christiana Olalekan, Fatima Shehu, Tolulope Adeyemo and Odunayo Nejo crossing the line ahead of TASUED (silver) and LASU (bronze). In the men’s 4x100m relay, UNICAL, anchored by Iwara Mathias, dominated with a time of 41.22 seconds, beating FUTA (42.39s) and EKSU (42.50s).
The women’s 4x100m relay saw FUOYE narrowly edge TASUED for gold, led by 100m/200m double silver medallist Taofikat Sulaimon, while FUTA took bronze. UNIJOS’ Ezekiel Davou added his fourth medal of the Games, winning gold in the men’s 3000m, with the University of Ibadan’s Elijah Eke taking silver and Musbahu Hamza of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology claiming bronze.
EKSU continued their impressive run in the men’s 4x400m relay, with Olumide Esan, Ayomide Ajibodu, Toluwanimi Adeyonu and Daniel Godwin securing gold ahead of UNIJOS (silver) and TASUED (bronze). TASUED wrapped up the athletics programme on a high note by winning the women’s 4x400m relay, with FUTA and OAU taking silver and bronze, respectively.
Basketball semifinals provided more thrills, as NSUK edged TSU 42-40 in the women’s bracket, while UNIJOS defeated BUK 35-30. In the men’s category, Nile University overpowered UNIJOS 99-52 to advance to the final.
Swimming stars dominated their lanes, with Kimiakigha Joy claiming nine gold medals to top the female events, while Victor Urunah collected five gold and three silver medals in the men’s category.
