Plateau United and Mighty Jets claimed opening day wins at the 2026 NPFL Super 6 invitational preseason tournament on Wednesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The two sides, who entered the competition as wildcards, did just enough to beat their respective opponents to put them in a vantage position to progress from the group after just one game.
Plateau United began their campaign on a winning note after securing a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Rivers United in the opening match of the tournament.
The encounter, played in front of an enthusiastic crowd at the New Jos Stadium, produced a closely contested battle between two strong Nigerian football sides. Both teams showed determination from the opening whistle, with the players competing for every ball and looking to gain an early advantage.
Plateau United eventually found the breakthrough with Jibril Ibrahim scoring the only goal of the match just before the half-hour mark. Rivers United responded by pushing forward in search of an equaliser, but the Plateau United defence remained organised and disciplined to see out the win.
In the other match of the day, Mighty Jets piped Elkanemi Warriors 1-0 to also record a win on the opening day.
The closely contested encounter saw both teams battle for supremacy, but neither side was able to find the breakthrough before the half-time whistle. The first 45 minutes ended goalless as both defences remained disciplined.
Mighty Jets eventually broke the deadlock in the 56th minute when Usman Meyanga converted his opportunity to put his team ahead.
El-Kanemi Warriors responded strongly after conceding, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. However, Mighty Jets defended resolutely and successfully protected their one-goal advantage until the final whistle.
The victory gives Mighty Jets an important boost as the Super Six tournament continues, while El-Kanemi Warriors will look to bounce back in their next fixture against Katsina United on Thursday.
