Lobi Stars goalkeeper, Japhet Opubo, has reportedly been offered to South African giants Kaizer Chiefs, who are looking to add a goalkeeper to their squad ahead of the 2025/2026 season, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 30-year-old shot-stopper, who won the Nigeria Premier Football League title with Rangers in 2024, has become a surprise transfer target for the Kaizer Chiefs.
The 15-time MTN8 Cup winners, following a disastrous PSL campaign where they conceded the second-most goals in the league, have turned their focus to bringing in a new goalkeeper ahead of the 2025/2026 season.
Amakhosi, as they are fondly called, are faced with a mini goalkeeping crisis as Rwandan international Fiacre Ntwari faces the exit door, while Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen have shown promise but are yet to grab the opportunity.
According to a report in the South African press, Lobi Stars goalkeeper Japhet Opubo is being considered for a move to Naturena from the Nigerian Premier League.
“Japhet Opubo is a top goalkeeper who has proven himself in Nigeria over the past few seasons, and he could be a good addition at a big club like Kaizer Chiefs,” a source told Soccer Laduma.
“His representatives are assessing options for him, and there is a possibility that he can be offered to Kaizer Chiefs,” the insider added.
Meanwhile, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who plays for Chippa United in the PSL, has also been heavily linked with a switch to Amakhosi.
Opubo, who spent the first half of the 2024/25 season at Rangers, moved to relegated Lobi Stars and made nine consecutive appearances in the second round for the Makurdi side.
