Head coach of Nigeria Premier Football League side, Rivers United, Finidi George has disclosed that despite the low output of goals so far this term, his team can get the goals when needed, www.aclsports.com reports.
Rivers United played out a goalless draw with Bendel Insurance in their rescheduled match day nine clash decided on Thursday in Benin.
The former Super Eagles manager, while reacting to the questions after the game, argued that the result was a fair one, and that his side appreciates it.
“We knew from the onset that it’s going to be difficult,” said Finidi George to pressmen after the game.
“I already told the boys that they have to fight because it’s going to be scrappy, and they did just that.
“We had to defend properly to get something out of this game. Kudos to my players for maintaining their composure, even when it was difficult in the second half.”
The head coach also defended his side’s style of play in the game, stressing they will play differently in the CAF Champions League group stage.
“Of course, this is the NPFL. Sometimes, you don’t get the free-flowing football that you get in the EPL, but we are used to it. Even though we’ve qualified for the CAF Champions League group stage, when that time comes, we will play differently.
“Our last Qualifiers for the CAFCL group stage, we scored three goals. So, I think my team can score goals, but there are some situations in which you appreciate what you get.”
“Defensively this season, the boys have been fantastic, and we will keep encouraging them to do more. On the goalscoring aspect, we will keep working on the players. We will just go back, and look at those games and see where we can be better,” the former NPFL winner concluded.
Rivers United will travel to Owerri to face Kun Khalifat in their next league action on Monday.
