English Championship club, Middlesbrough, have announced the signing of Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel on a short term deal.

Mikel has put pen to paper on a six month contract, joining on a free following the end of his contract at Chinese Super League side, Tianjin Teda.

With over 400 appearances at club level, especially for another English side, Chelsea, Mikel’s capture is one that has pleased his new manager, Tony Pulis.

“I’m pleased to get him in,” Pulis said. “He is a man with a lot of experience and quality.”

The Super Eagles captain becomes Boro’s second signing of the winter window after the arrival of Rajiv van La Parra, who also arrived on loan from Huddersfield earlier in the month.

The Nigerian, who spent 11 years at Chelsea before leaving in 2017, is also excited by his latest adventure and can’t wait to play his part in helping the club achieve their target- promotion to the Premier League.

“The club wants to get promoted so hopefully I’m here to help in any way I can,” Mikel said, according to the club’s official website.

“It’s a family club and this is what I want. I like stability and this is why I was at Chelsea for a very long time.”

The 31-year-old captained Nigera in the 2018 FIFA World Cup held in Russia,, where the Super Eagles exited at the group stages.
