Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche led his LaLiga club Getafe to an opening day win by scoring one goal and assisting the other, in a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Celta Vigo on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 22-year-old was the standout performer for his side, as he helped the Madrid club claim an unexpected win over Celta Vigo. He scored the game’s second goal in the 72nd minute after he had set up Adrián Liso for Geta Azulones’ first goal of the new La Liga campaign.
Having been given the number 10 jersey at the club before the start of the new season, Uche was given a starting berth in their season opener as he played off striker Adrian Liso at the Estadio de Balaidos.
After a cagey first half with the game still goalless, the two sides came out to play more attacking football in the second half. Just two minutes after the interval, Getafe got their noses in front courtesy of Adrian Liso’s goal. A simple square ball from Uche found the former Zaragoza man, who then drilled a well-placed shot into the bottom-right corner of the post for the lead.
Getafe, known for its defensive organization, stood their ground against the hosts even as they poured forward in search of the equalizer.
However, the visitors doubled their lead to put an end to any fight from Celta. Uche latched onto a long ball from Ismael Bekhoucha, stood his ground against his two defenders, dribbled past the goalkeeper, and rolled the ball into an unguarded net for Getafe’s second goal. Following his goal and assist for Getafe, Uche was named the Man of the Match by LaLiga.
The midfielder will be hoping to be a part of Eric Chelle’s squad for next month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa, having impressed in the Unity Cup some months ago.
