Francesca Ikhiede, one of Nigeria’s top volleyball players, has had an incredible 2024. She was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the women’s category at the 2024 CGC Volleyball Premier League in Abuja and also emerged as the champion at the 2024 National Beach Volleyball Star Tour in Bauchi.

www.aclsports.com had the chance to sit down with Francesca to discuss her achievements, her mindset, and what has driven her success.

Aclsports: How do you feel about winning the Most Valuable Player award in the CGC Volleyball Premier League women’s category?

Ikhiede: Winning the MVP award is a surreal and humbling experience. It’s a testament to my hard work, dedication, and sacrifices over the years. I owe a lot of gratitude to the Comptroller General of Customs and his management team for their support, vision, and commitment to the growth of volleyball in Nigeria. Their efforts have created an enabling environment for players like me to excel and showcase our talents, and for that, I am deeply thankful.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the collective effort of my teammates and coaches. Their trust, synergy, and encouragement have been instrumental in my success. This award is not just mine but a reflection of the dedication and hard work of everyone who has been part of this journey. It’s truly an honor to receive this recognition.

Aclsports: This year, you were both the champion at the National Beach Volleyball Star Tour and the MVP at the CGC Volleyball Premier League. How would you describe this year?

Ikhiede: This year has been nothing short of phenomenal. Emerging as a champion in both the beach volleyball tour and the CGC Volleyball Premier League feels like a dream come true. It’s been a year filled with challenges, growth, and remarkable achievements. These victories reflect the passion and commitment of not just myself but also my team and support system. This year has truly redefined what’s possible when you remain focused, resilient, and determined to succeed.

Aclsports: What has been the secret behind your consistency over the years?

Ikhiede: Consistency comes from a combination of discipline, a strong work ethic, and a genuine love for the game. I’ve learned to embrace both victories and setbacks as opportunities for growth. Staying physically and mentally prepared, setting clear goals, and having a supportive network of mentors, coaches, teammates, and family have been the foundation of my consistency. It’s this balance of preparation and passion that has kept me motivated and striving for excellence over the years.

Aclsports: How has the synergy in the women’s team shaped your mindset and performance?

Ikhiede: The synergy in the women’s team has been a game-changer for me. Playing alongside individuals who share the same drive and vision is incredibly inspiring. This unity has taught me the value of trust, effective communication, and collaboration. It has reinforced the idea that individual success is deeply rooted in collective effort. This mindset has motivated me always to give my best for the team and to continually push myself to grow both as a player and as a person.

Aclsports: As a senior player, what advice would you give to younger players looking up to you?

Ikhiede: My advice to younger players is simple: stay disciplined, work hard, and never stop learning. Focus on mastering the fundamentals of the game, and always be willing to put in that extra effort—both on and off the court. Respect your teammates and never underestimate the power of teamwork. Most importantly, believe in yourself. If you do, great things will come your way.
