Nigeria Super Falcons are still the best women’s football team in Africa according to the latest FIFA Women’s World Ranking released on Thursday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Despite not playing any match since December 13 when the rankings were last published, the record African champions remain top of the rankings on the continent, and they also retained their 36th spot globally.
Meanwhile, Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) holders South Africa also retained their second place in Africa but dropped to 54th position in the global rankings. Completing the top three is Morocco – hosts of the WAFCON later this year – placed 60th in the world.
On the other hand, Zambia dropped two places to 64th but remain fourth-best in Africa. Black Queens of Ghana and the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are 5th and 6th on the continent and 64th and 65th globally respectively. Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Senegal and Algeria complete the top 10 on the continent.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have been top of the FIFA rankings for a while, but they have not won the WAFCON since 2018 and they will be looking to get their hands on it later this summer. However, the emergence of Desiree Ellis’ South Africa pose a great threat to the chances of the Super Falcons who are still being tutored by Justin Magudu (interim).
Globally, the United States are still top of the rankings, while world champions Spain are in second place. Germany and England both retained their places behind the top two in third and fourth respectively.
The next FIFA Women’s World Ranking will be released on 12 June 2025, and the Super Falcons will be keen to climb up ahead of the WAFCON tournament in Morocco.
