The Confederation of African Football (CAF) through its Disciplinary Board has imposed sanctions on the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football (FRMF), and some players and officials for the multiple incidents during the 2025 AFCON final in Rabat, Morocco, www.aclsports.com reports.
In a statement made available to the press in the early hours of Thursday, CAF’s disciplinary committee handed a five-game suspension in CAF official matches and $100,000 fine to Pape Thiaw, Senegal’s head coach, for his unsporting conduct, which brought the game to disrepute in the final.
Senegal players Ilman Ndiaye and Ismaila Sarr both received two-match bans in CAF Official matches for unsporting behaviour towards the referee. Then the FSF were handed multiple financial fines, totalling $600,000 for for the improper conduct of its supporters, and unsporting conduct of their players and technical staff in violation of the CAF Disciplinary Code principles of fair play, loyalty and integrity. In addition, they received an additional $15,000 fine for the five players booked during the game.
For the FRMF, the CAF Disciplinary Board decided that skipper Achraf Hakimi is suspended for two matches, with one (1) of these matches being suspended for one (1) year from the date of this decision, for his unsporting behaviour. Meanwhile, midfielder Ismaël Saibari, who was involved in the towel gate, got a 3-match suspension for his unsporting behaviour, as well as a fine of $100,000.
The FRMF got a monetary fine totalling $300,000 for the improper conduct of the ball boys in the game, as well as that of the players who encroached on the VAR area and obstructed the match officials from doing their job. In addition, they also got a fine of $15,000 for the use of lasers by their supporters during the aforementioned match.
Despite the drama in that final, Senegal went ahead to beat the hosts thanks to Papa Gueye’s stunning strike in extra time to claim their second AFCON title.
