Bayelsa Queens began their WAFU B CAF Women’s Champions League qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over Ghana’s Police Ladies on Sunday, thanks to goals from Shakirat Moshood and Emem Essien, www.aclsports.com reports.
At the Stade Charles Konan Banny Stadium in Yamoussoukro, the reigning Nigerian champions broke the deadlock in the 12th minute. Shakirat Moshood showed fine composure, controlling Janet Akekoromowei’s headed pass before calmly slotting past the goalkeeper. Bayelsa nearly doubled their lead in the 36th minute, but a goal-line clearance denied them.
Akekoromowei missed a couple of opportunities to get on the scoresheet, while Police Ladies pressed in search of an equaliser before the break.
The Nigerians eventually extended their advantage in the 62nd minute through substitute Emem Essien. Last year’s WAFU B top scorer with Edo Queens, Essien had come on in the first half for Sofiat Bankole and wasted no time making her mark—tucking away Moshood’s cross with a clinical finish.
Police Ladies responded six minutes later, as Mary Berko capitalised on a defensive lapse to pull one back and set up a tense finale. Despite some sloppy passing and missed chances from both sides, Bayelsa held firm to claim all three points.
For her decisive goal, assist, and overall display, Moshood was deservedly named Player of the Match.
With the victory, Bayelsa Queens got their campaign off to a winning start. They will face Association Sportive de la Kozah Football Club of Togo on Wednesday before rounding off the group stage against Sam Nelly FC of Benin Republic on Saturday.
