In a day that will be remembered less for its football, the days of the Vicente Calderon is certainly over as Atletico Madrid have finally moved to their new home, Wanda Metropolitano
Atletico inaugurated their new home on Saturday in spectacular fashion, before going ahead to beat their visitors, Malaga 1-0 in the La Liga on Saturday.
It was a typical Atletico performance, and a perfect end to the inauguration as star forward, Antoine Griezman’s will be remembered as the man who scored the first goal at Wanda.
The only goal was scored by the Frenchman a minute after the hour mark, to become the first player to score in their new home, as they held on to begin life at Wanda in a fitting and typical Atletico style- 1-0.
Manager, Diego Simeone was all emotional, especially of the inauguration.
“I have never seen anything like it,” he admitted. “[And] I will remember it for the rest of my life.”
For Griezman, he has never played in a better stadium.
“The Wanda Metropolitano is the best stadium I have ever played in,” the 27-year-old said.
While the home side may have picked all three points at their new home, nothing was more important on the day than the start of a new life, with Vincente Calderon now in the past.
