The Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare said Nigeria athletics team has the potential of putting the country on the podium at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Sunday Dare stated this at the closing ceremony of the Kwara state sports festival held at the stadium in IIorin.

Dare told journalist that the country’s has one of the best women’s relay team in the world.

He said, “This country has one of the best relay teams (about the third or fourth) in the world; we were second before and are trying to re-enact where we were when it comes to relay. Athletics wise, the country is good and ready for the relay”.

He hailed 2018 Commonwealth champion, Tobiloba Amusan for her outstanding performance clocking another lifetime best of 7.84s, to win the 60mH at the 2020 World Athletics Indoor Tour in Germany.

Dare said, “What happened with Tobiloba Amusan signposts the future of Nigeria Athletics. Amusan raced to a new lifetime best of 7.84s to win the 60 meters hurdles at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in Karlsruhe, Germany and her time is currently number two on the World Athletics top list in 2020 as well as number two by an African woman in history.

“We have the likes of Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume, Blessing Okagbare, Divine Oduduru and a host of others who have written their names in gold too”.
