World record holder in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, is carving a new path on the flat track. The Nigerian sprint star showcased her rising prowess in the 100m dash, clocking a season’s best (SB) of 11.18s to finish 4th in the Women’s 100m Final at the Racers Grand Prix, www.aclsports.com reports.
Known for her dominance over the barriers, Amusan skipped the hurdles entirely at this meet, lining up instead against a strong field of 100m specialists.
The event, held in Kingston Jamaica, featured some of the fastest women in the sport. Amusan held her own in the competitive race, finishing just behind podium finishers: Tina Clayton (JAM) won in 10.98s (1.8m/s wind), followed by Jacious Sears (USA) in 11.04s, and Alana Reid (JAM) in 11.16s. Amusan took 4th with 11.18s, marking her fastest time this season.
Her shift toward sprinting began after the Tokyo Olympics, prompting her and longtime coach Lacena Golding-Clarke to relocate from the U.S. to Jamaica in late 2024. She now trains at the Racers Track Club under the legendary Glen Mills, mentor to sprint icons Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake.
“I feel like I’m more of a sprinter than a hurdler, and I wasn’t about to let that talent go to waste,” Amusan said.
While her hurdles legacy remains untouched, Amusan’s sprinting ambitions are clearly gaining momentum, and there’s no sign of them slowing down.
