Denmark’s Anders Lind made history as the first player to successfully defend his men’s singles title, while Japan’s Satsuki Odo produced a stunning display to dethrone defending champion Honoka Hashimoto and claim the women’s title at the WTT Contender Lagos 2026 on Sunday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The tournament, held from 19–24 May in Lagos, Nigeria, concluded with high-intensity action at the Sir Molade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, as both singles finals delivered contrasting storylines of dominance and upsets.
In the Men’s Singles Final, Lind retained his crown after defeating Korea’s Oh Junsung in a hard-fought five-game encounter. Despite the 4–1 scoreline (11-6, 11-9, 11-5, 10-12, 11-8), the match was tightly contested, with the Dane repeatedly pushed by the Korean’s resilience.
Speaking after his victory, Anders Lind expressed delight at both the result and the atmosphere in Lagos.
“I’m so happy right now. It’s one of the best feelings in the world, it’s not often that you win tournaments. It’s one of my best games and of course with these fans how can I not. I mean they are cheering for me, dancing when I’m winning the point. It warms my heart and it gives a great feeling and motivation to really try and fight. It’s amazing to play here and I really enjoy it.”
Reflecting on his opponent, he added:
“It’s the first time I played against him, so I didn’t know what to expect, but of course he’s a great player. He’s amazing, which he also showed in this match. I feel I played really really well. This match was 4-1 but it was close, it could have gone either way. He was very solid in his defence, his receiving was very good and he’s just overall a very stable player. So all props to him but I’m very happy that I defeated him.”
Anders Lind also highlighted the significance of his achievement.
“Being the first player to retain the title is great. It’s difficult to do something no one has ever done before, so I’m very proud to have defended my title here. Let’s make it three.”
In the Women’s Singles Final, Odo produced a commanding performance to deny compatriot Honoka Hashimoto back-to-back titles, sealing a 4–1 victory (11-3, 5-11, 11-3, 11-6, 11-4). Her aggressive style proved decisive as she consistently broke through Hashimoto’s defensive setup to claim her third WTT Series title of the season.
Hashimoto arrived in the final in dominant form, winning four consecutive matches in straight games, after dropping just one game throughout her 2025 title-winning campaign. However, she was unable to maintain that momentum against Odo’s relentless intensity.
The Men’s Doubles Final saw India’s Manav Thakkar and Manush Shah secure the title with a straight-games victory over Romania’s Iulian Chirita and Andrei Istrate, winning 3–0 (11-7, 12-10, 11-4).
The Women’s Doubles Final produced one of the biggest surprises of the tournament as debut pairing Joo Cheonhui and Reina Aso stunned top seeds Saki Shibata and Hitomi Sato. After losing the opening game, they responded strongly to complete a 3–1 comeback victory (1-11, 11-8, 11-7, 11-4).
In the Mixed Doubles Final, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale delivered a dominant display to defeat Samuel Walker and S. Lutz in straight games, 3–0 (11-8, 14-12, 11-8), rounding off a successful week for the Indian contingent.
The Lagos event delivered a mix of title defences, breakthroughs, and upsets, with Lind and Odo headlining the singles action.
