Number two seed Roger Federer progressed to the fourth round with a 6-2 7-5 6-4 win over Richard Gasquet in 1 hr 15mins. 36 year old Federer extended his record over Gasquet to 17-2, with the Frenchman only ever beaten Federer on clay.

19th seed Tomas Berdych dumped Juan Martin Del Potro out of the Australian Open with a 6-3 6-3 6-2 win. The Argentine made the final in Auckland last week and had hoped to make a big impact at Melbourne Park.Del Potro has not made it past the third round of the Australian Open since 2012, when he reached the quarter-finals.

Former world number one, Novak Djokovic overcame an injury scare to sail to the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straight-sets win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas. Six-time winner Djokovic who had treatment on his lower back and leg is playing in his first event since Wimbledon last year after a six-month lay-off with an elbow injury.

Dominic Thiem recorded a straight-sets victory over Adrian Mannarino to reach the fourth round. The Austrian had a 6-4 6-2 7-5 win on Margaret Court Arena.

Alexander Zverev continued his poor run of form at Grand Slams with a third round defeat to Chung Hyeon at the Australian Open.Chung overcame the German 5-7 7-6(3) 2-6 6-3 6-0.Despite securing two Masters titles in 2017, the 20-year-old has never gone beyond the fourth round of a Grand Slam.

In the women’s event, Angelique Kerber displayed an outstanding performance to beat Maria Sharapova 6-1 6-3 in 64 minutes breaking serve five times.

World number one Simona Halep fought back from a set down to beat America’s Lauren Davis to reach the Australian Open fourth round. The Romanian recorded a 4-6 6-4 15-13 win over Davis.

Karolina Pliskova battled into the fourth round with a 7-6(6) 7-5 win over Lucie Safarova. In a match of just three break points between two Czech seeds, it was the former world number one who held her nerve on Court 3.

American Madison Keys reached the fourth round without dropping a set beating Ana Bogdan 6-3 6-4 while Eight seed Caroline Garcia beat Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-3 5-7 6-2.
