2018 AYG: Team Nigeria increase medal tally on Day 2

Team Nigeria on Friday afternoon clinched two silver medals in the mixed Judo and women’s cycling events of the on-going 3rd Africa Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria.

Nigeria’s Grace Haruna and Daniel Madu lost to Abdellah Remouche and Nabila Benbelkacem of Algeria in front of Algeria fans in the tensed mixed bout. This is the first of its kind on African soil.

Team Nigeria won a total of five medals consisting of two silver and three bronze.

In the men’s Table tennis singles, Nigeria’s Azeez Sholanke beat Angola’s José Fernandez 3-0 in the singles event at the ongoing Africa Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria. He lost to Tunisia’s Youssef Attia by 2-3 and returned to winning ways against Morocco’s Salim Karam 3-0. Azeez qualified to the quarter-finals with five points.

Tosin Oribamise has qualified for the quarter-finals of the women’s singles at the Youth Games.

She beat her three opponents; Ladan Waberi Abdallah of Djibouti 3-0, Lilowtoe Jalim 0f Mauritius 3-1 and Tshepang Motlhalamme of Thailand 3-0.

Meanwhile, Nigeria won her male and female Beach Volleyball matches. The male team beat Togo by 2-0, while the female team also defeated Lesotho by 2-0.

The Nigeria male hockey team defeated Kenya 2-1 to continue their unbeaten run. The boys had a walk over in their first match as the Ugandan boys failed to turn up.

Nigeria girls were beaten by Namibia 0-4 at their first game at the ongoing Africa Youth Games in Algiers, Algeria.
Friday’s silver and bronze medals bring to the total number of medals to 15 medals.

Weightlifting: six gold and three silver
Judo: Two silver and three bronze
Cycling: one silver
