Venus beats Kvitova to set up an all American semi final with Slaone Stephens

Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta reached the US Open semi-finals for the first time with a 6-4 6-4 6-2 win over 25 year old Diego Schwartzman.

The 12th seed overcame Schwartzman 6-4 6-4 6-2 in one hour and 58 minutes at the Flushing Meadows.

26 year old Carreno Busta, is the highest-ranked man left in the bottom half of the draw.

Carreno Busta is yet to drop a set at the tournament and will face Kevin Anderson in the last four.

Anderson made his first ever Grand Slam semi-final with a 7-6(5), 6-7(9), 6-3, 7-6(7) win over American Sam Querry.

Anderson becomes the first South African to reach a US Open semifinal in the Open era by defeating Querrey.

In the women’s tournament, Venus Williams reached her 23rd Grand Slam semi-final with a thrilling win over Petra Kvitova in a final-set tie-break.

The 37-year-old won 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-2) in front of a rapturous crowd at the Flushing Meadows.

Venus next faces Sloane Stephens in an all-American semi-final in New York.

Stephens won a final-set tie-break to beat Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova and reach her first US Open semi-final.

The 24-year-old returned from a back injury to win 6-3 3-6 7-6 (7-4) on Tuesday.

With Madison Keys and Coco Vandeweghe also through to the last eight, there is the possibility of all-American semi-finals.
