Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has received his maiden call-up to Nigeria’s Super Eagles ahead of this month’s Unity Cup, www.aclsports.com reports.
”It is an honour to play for your country, Okonkwo told NFF TV in an interview.
”I am so excited, and I can’t wait. I have been waiting for this moment for a while now, and to finally have the opportunity now, it is incredible.
The Unity Cup is an international football tournament aimed at bringing the Afrocentric and diaspora communities in the United Kingdom together, with this year’s tournament scheduled to take place between May 26 and 30. The Valley, home to Charlton Athletic FC, is the venue of the tournament.
”I want to be a consistent performer for the country. I want to be someone they can trust with their goal for every game. But there is a process before getting there. I want to work towards this and build the trust with the fans,” added the 24-year-old.
Okonkwo, who represented England at various youth levels, including Under-18s during his time at Arsenal, is set to make his debut for Nigeria at the Unity Cup. The goalkeeper featured regularly for Wrexham in their Premier League promotion push with 39 appearances this season, and kept 10 clean sheets in the process.
Nigeria, who are the defending champions of the competition, will feature alongside Zimbabwe, Jamaica, and India in the 2026 edition of the tournament.
