The 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season continued this weekend and we saw some outstanding results across various centres. With all the matches now concluded and sights are currently on the midweek action, here is a look at some of the talking points from match day six.

Relief for winless trio

3️⃣ - After five match days in the #NPFL this season, only Ikorodu City, Bayelsa United, and Akwa United are without a win this term.#NPFL25 pic.twitter.com/yR8nRt7WQx

Before this match day, the trio had no win in the NPFL this season. However, things changed for them as they all recorded their first wins of the campaign. On Saturday, Ikorodu City thumped Bendel Insurance 3-0 in Lagos, Akwa United also defeated Kano Pillars 2-0, and Bayelsa United pipped Plateau United 1-0 in Yenagoa.

They were the last set of teams to secure a win in the league this campaign and they will be keen to build on the result from this particular match day.

Rain disruption

Our match against Kwara United is now set for Sunday at 8 am, due to heavy rain making the pitch unplayable.#ABIKWA #Warriors 🔴

The rain did affect the plans for the weekend. The clash between Abia Warriors and Kwara United at the Umuahia Township Stadium had to be postponed because of the heavy downpour that rendered the pitch unplayable hours before the scheduled kick-off time. The game was eventually played on Sunday morning with the home side winning 1-0 thanks to Sunday Megwo’s goal.

Similarly, the final half-hour of the game in Yenagoa between Bayelsa United and Plateau United was interrupted due to heavy downpour. The game was eventually concluded after the conditions were fair enough and Bayelsa United claimed their first win of the season courtesy of Ibrahim Yahaya’s early goal.

Former NPFL title winner, Finidi George, and his in-form Rivers United side went to Katsina United and the contest finished in a goalless draw. Similarly, Emmanuel Amuneke, following Heartland’s first win of the season last weekend, led his side to their first point under his guidance on the road against Elkanemi in Maiduguri. In the match day’s final game – Shooting Stars v Enyimba – Yemi Olarenwaju’s side left Ibadan without a defeat for the second season in a row.
