NPFL: Enyimba confirm Uche Okechukwu as new Sporting Director

NPFL side, Enyimba of Aba, have confirmed the appointment of former Super Eagles defender, Uche Okechukwu MON, fondly known as the “Gentle Giant,” as the new Sporting Director of the club, www.aclsports.com reports.

The appointment comes after the resignation of former Sporting Director Ifeanyi Ekuweme from the position just days ago. The club has now moved swiftly to appoint another former Nigerian international.

”Enyimba Football Club is pleased to officially announce the appointment of former Super Eagles defender and club legend, Uche Okechukwu MON, fondly known as the “Gentle Giant,” as the new Sporting Director of the club,” Enyimba said in a statement made available to the public on Saturday.

The statement also added that the chairman of the club, Nwankwo Kanu, has so much belief in the ex-international’s appointment to return the club to the pinnacle of domestic and continental football.

Okechukwu is a true icon of Nigerian and African football and a proud legend of Enyimba FC. He enjoyed an illustrious playing career in Europe, starring for Brøndby IF of Denmark and Fenerbahçe SK of Turkey, where he earned widespread respect for his leadership, composure, and defensive excellence.

On the home scene, he featured for Enyimba FC, Flash Flamingoes FC, and Iwuanyanwu National FC at the local scene, winning laurels. For Nigeria, he was part of the Super Eagles squad that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, a historic team that also represented Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup in the USA, the country’s first appearance at the World Cup.

Before he was appointed Sporting Director, Uche Okechukwu had been a part of the Enyimba board under the current management.
