
Nigerian players were back in action across Europe and beyond over the weekend, with Joy Omewa scoring for Fortuna Hjørring and Toni Payne registering her first assist of the season for Everton, www.aclsports.com reports.
Joy Omewa scored her 11th league goal of the season for Fortuna Hjørring in their 2–1 defeat to Aarhus in the Danish Women’s League. She struck an equaliser in the 63rd minute, but Sofie Vendelbo restored Aarhus’ lead just minutes later to secure the win.
In the Women’s Super League, Toni Payne recorded her first goal contribution of the campaign as Everton lost 2–1 to Manchester City. The midfielder set up Kelly Gago for a lovely back-heel finish in the 40th minute to draw Everton level after Vivianne Miedema had opened the scoring for City in the 21st. Jamaican forward Khadija Shaw restored City’s lead in the 54th minute to send them top of the table.
Chiamaka Nnadozie made three saves to help Brighton & Hove Albion earn a 1–1 draw away to Liverpool. Substitute Rosa Kafaji struck deep into stoppage time (90+3) to rescue a point after Beata Olsson had given Liverpool a first-half lead.
At the Copperjax Community Stadium, Rofiat Imuran featured from the start as London City Lionesses defeated Tottenham Hotspur 4–2, their fourth league win of the season. Imuran was withdrawn in the closing stages.
In Turkey, Oluwatosin Demehin stood out in defence for Galatasaray as they cruised to a commanding 5–0 victory over Beşiktaş. The result kept them top of the Turkish Women’s Süper Lig on goal difference ahead of Flourish Sabastine’s Fenerbahçe, who edged Amed SK 2–1 with the Nigerian forward starting once again.
Over in Portugal, Christy Ucheibe impressed in defence for Benfica as they secured a 2–0 away win over SC União Torreense in the Liga BPI. The result extended the champions’ unbeaten run and kept them firmly in control at the top of the standings.
In France, Jennifer Echegini and Rasheedat Ajibade both started for Paris Saint-Germain as they ran out 4–0 winners against Fleury 91 in Division 1 Féminine. Ajibade was substituted at the start of the second half, while Echegini was withdrawn in the 68th minute. The victory lifted PSG to second place, five points behind leaders Olympique Lyonnais.
Meanwhile, it was disappointment in Mexico for Chinwendu Ihezuo and Osinachi Ohale, as Pachuca Femenil were eliminated from the Liga MX Femenil play-offs following a 5–0 defeat to Cruz Azul, bowing out 6–2 on aggregate despite a first-leg 2–1 win.
Ashleigh Plumptre started for Al Ittihad as they secured a 3–2 triumph over Al Qadsiah in the Saudi Women’s Premier League, with Algerian forward Lina Boussaha scoring twice, including the match-winning goal in the 79th minute.
