Nigeria lifters rake in 9 gold medals at Africa Championships

Nigeria weightlifters won 9 gold medals at the just concluded Africa Senior Weightlifting Championship in Cairo, Egypt. Nigeria female lifters, Chika Amalaha (55kg), Chinenye Fidelis (59kg) and All African Games gold medallist, Bilikis Otunla (76kg) won three gold medals in their various weight classes.

Louis Okoro, a member of the Nigeria Weightlifting Federation told www.aclsports.com that the team consists of four female lifters, one male and one coach.

He listed the lifters as; Augustina Nwokolo (49kg), Chika Amalaha (55kg), Chinenye Fidelis (59kg) and Bilikis Otunla (76kg) in the female team while Joseph Edidong  (67KG) is the only male and the team was accompanied by Coach Ojadi Aduche.

Okoro said, “Let me commend the lofty commitment, dedication and resilience that you displayed at the championship, alongside that unique Nigerian spirit that was mostly in evidence against other competitors. You are indeed true champions, and we believe you will excel at the 2019 All African Games in Morocco.

Meanwhile, African champion Chika Amalaha on her social media page wrote, “When we achieve, we usually do so because others have helped. I acknowledge those who have helped in achieving this goal, especially, to God who has strengthened me spiritually, physically, emotionally, and psychological”.
