Nigeria secured their first win at the 2026 African Women’s Volleyball Championship after defeating Ghana 3-2 in Nairobi on Wednesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
The team bounced back from their opening-day 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-20 and 25-20) loss to Tunisia on Tuesday to claim a hard-fought victory over their West African neighbours at the Ulinzi Indoor Arena.
Nigeria took the opening set 25-21 in the Group C encounter, but Ghana responded strongly to level the match at 1-1 after taking the second set 25-21. They regained control in the third set, cruising to a 25-11 victory, only for Ghana to force a deciding fifth set with an 11-25 win in the fourth.
The final set produced a tense finish as both teams battled for every point, but Nigeria held their nerve to win 18-16 and complete the 3-2 victory.
Outside hitter Ijoma Elizabeth played an important role for Nigeria, while the team also produced key contributions at the net through their middle blockers during crucial stages of the contest.
In the other Group C match played on Wednesday, Cameroon defeated Tunisia 3-0, winning 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23.
Nigeria are currently third in Group C and will take on Cameroon on Thursday, with the Nigerians looking to build on their victory over Ghana.
