Lionel Messi said Argentina’s 2–0 win over Austria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup was a difficult test, as his brace secured qualification to the Round of 32 and saw him become the tournament’s all-time leading scorer with 18 goalss, www.aclsports.com reports.
Speaking after the match, the Argentina captain admitted it was a demanding encounter and praised his side’s concentration throughout.
“It was a very tough win. We knew it would be intense and that we couldn’t afford any lapses because they are a very intense side. I’m happy with the result and with qualification. Getting six points early was important so we can have a calmer week,” he said.
Messi said the team’s focus had always been on securing early qualification rather than individual milestones, with Argentina the defending champions.
“We planned to win both matches. We knew nothing would be easy; every game at this World Cup is tight and competitive,” he said.
He also acknowledged Austria’s midfield pressure made it difficult for Argentina to control possession.
“At times it was hard to sustain our usual long spells of possession. They didn’t really hurt us, but it was a very tight match and difficult to play,” he said.
“We had to play quickly at moments, and we did. The important thing is we qualified. We always want to win, but we know we have to earn it on the pitch.”
Looking ahead, Messi stressed the importance of maintaining focus as the tournament progresses, saying: “It’s step by step. This is a long and difficult competition, and we prepare the same way for every match.”
Reflecting on his role, he added: “I enjoy every moment on the pitch. It’s always special for me.”
He also admitted frustration after missing a penalty but said the team’s response was what mattered most. “I was angry with myself for the penalty; it was poorly taken,” he said. “But we reacted well, took control of the game, and got the three points. That’s what matters.”
Argentina face World Cup debutants Jordan in their final group game at the Dallas Stadium in the United States.
