Team Nigeria endured a mixed Day 2 at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games without adding to its medal tally, with Abduljabar Adama reaching the men’s 50m freestyle semifinal but falling short of a place in the final, www.aclsports.com reports.
Abduljabar Adama, the Nigerian national record holder, clocked 22.67 seconds in the 50m freestyle heats to finish third and qualify for the semifinals. Australia’s Flynn Southam won the heat in 22.03 seconds, ahead of England’s Jacob Mills, who recorded 22.40 seconds.
Clinton Opute was also in action in the event, finishing sixth in his heat in 23.15 seconds to become the second reserve for the semifinals.
Adama’s busy schedule continued in the 100m butterfly, where he and Colins Ebingha competed in the same heat. Ebingha finished sixth in 55.45 seconds, while Adama was seventh in 55.81 seconds, with neither swimmer progressing.
The Nigerian then returned to the pool for the 50m freestyle semifinal but could not secure a place in the final after finishing sixth in 22.44 seconds.
David Akintola’s boxing campaign also came to an end after he suffered a 4-1 split-decision defeat to Tanzania’s Yusuf Lucasi Changalawe in their men’s round of 32 bout.
The contest went the distance, with Changalawe doing enough to earn the judges’ decision and book his place in the round of 16.
In wheelchair basketball, Nigeria suffered a 16-1 defeat to hosts Scotland in the women’s 3×3 competition.
Nigeria dropped to third from second on the medal table after Day 2, still with six medals, including three gold and three silver. Australia lead the standings with 23 medals, comprising 12 gold, five silver and six bronze, while England are second with 15 medals, three gold, seven silver and five bronze.
