The USA Women’s National Team (USWNT) are Champions of the FIFA Women’s World Cup (FIFAWWC) for the fourth time following their impressive 2-0 win over reigning European Champions, Netherlands in Lyon on Sunday.
Injured Megan Rapinoe returned to the starting line-up for USA having missed the semi-final victory over England and proved instrumental as she has done all tournament long.
Netherlands came with a plan to contain the reigning Champions and break swiftly when in possession which worked quite well until the hour mark when Van der Graft’s high boot on Alex Morgan in the box led to a penalty which was converted by Megan Rapinoe.
From then on, the European Champions threw caution to the wind going gong-ho on the USA defence which stood firm while USA also exploited spaces left behind by the Dutch side but goalkeeper Sari Van Veenendaal was immense in goal for the European Champions.
However as Netherlands kept going for the equaliser it was only a matter of time before USA finally added another goal which they did in the 69th minute courtesy of a wonderful run from Rose Lavelle from midfield to slot past Veenendaal in goal for Netherlands as USA won their fourth FIFAWWC title.
Asides from making it back to back FIFAWWC titles for the first time in their history, Jill Ellis also becomes the first manager to win the FIFAWWC back to back. In addition to that, the USA also won their first FIFAWWC trophy on European soil and became the first team to reach three consecutive finals winning two of them.
