World’s football governing body FIFA on Monday announced that Peru has been stripped of the hosting rights of the 2023 FIFA U17 World Cup (FIFAU17WC), www.aclsports.com reports.

Peru were going to become the third South American hosts of the U17 World Cup in the last four editions this year but the hosting rights has now been withdrawn after “extensive discussions between FIFA and the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF)”.

In spite of Monday’s rights withdrawing development, the tournament is still scheduled to hold as planned on the fixed date of November 10 to December 2 but the Bureau of FIFA Council will have to designate a new host.

FIFA has regretfully withdrawn Peru’s hosting rights to the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2023™ following extensive discussions between FIFA and the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF).

According to FIFA, Peru, who had previously hosted the tournament eighteen years ago was stripped of the rights this time as they failed to fulfil commitments to completing the infrastructure required to stage the tournament.

Despite a very positive working relationship between FIFA and the FPF, it has been determined that there is now not sufficient time to secure the required investment and complete the necessary work with the Peruvian government ahead of the tournament start date.

Nigeria’s national Under 17 team; the Golden Eaglets are the record champions of the FIFA U17 World Cup having won the tournament five times. They will also be bidding to secure a place in this year’s competition.

The Golden Eaglets are currently in Abuja preparing for the 2023 CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations which kicks off in Algeria later this month. The top four nations at the 12-team competition will qualify for the World Championship.
