Newly capped Super Eagles defender Christian Akpan has signed a new deal at Belgian side KRC Genk, www.aclsports.com reports.
The 21-year-old Nigerian, who joined Jong Genk in 2023, has extended his contract by four seasons, until the summer of 2030.
“We are pleased that Christian wants to commit his future to our club. Furthermore, due to his versatility, he is an extremely interesting profile for the technical staff. Players like him give coaches the ability to switch tactics during a match if necessary,” said Genk’s Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé.
In 59 official matches, he has shown tremendous drive. Strong in duels. Quick on the counter-attack. And with boundless commitment. In addition to his footballing and physical qualities, Akpan is highly versatile, as he has been deployed at left-back, right-back, and defensive midfield positions.
Last season, Akpan joined the first team after some strong performances with the development squad. He made his debut in the playoff match against KAA Gent, where he was immediately crowned Man of the Match by the supporters.
Despite international interest, Akpan has now opted for an extended stay at KRC Genk.
Last month, he made his debut for the Nigerian national team in the friendly against Portugal. He played 60 minutes in the 2-1 loss, playing alongside former Genk players Wilfred Ndidi and Paul Onuachu.
