A Marcos Alonso brace propelled defending champions, Chelsea to a dramatic hard fought 2-1 win over last season’s runners up, Tottenham Hotspur, at Wembley on Sunday.
The Blues opened the scoring in the 24th minute, after David Luiz was fouled by Dele Alli. Wing back Alonso stepped up to curl in a stunning free kick from 25 yards out to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.
Spurs equalised eight minutes from time, as substitute, Michy Batshuayi headed a Christian Eriksen free kick past his goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois.
Spurs dominated the match and had Chelsea on the defensive for most part of the game but they just couldn’t find the key to score
There was a late drama five minutes later, as a Hugo Lloris blunder in goal for Spurs allowed an Alonso shot pass through him to give Chelsea all three points and their first win of the season.
“I think we showed we are together – it was an unbelievable feeling to get the winner,” Alonso said moments after the match.
Up next for both teams, Tottenham host Burnley at Wembley, as they try to secure their first home victory of the season. While Chelsea will play host to Everton at Stamford Bridge.
