Super Eagles of Nigeria have been soundly beaten by the Djurtus of Guinea-Bissau in their 2027 AFCON qualifier match decided on Tuesday, www.aclsports.com reports.
Following the matchday one win for Nigeria against Madagascar, the Super Eagles travelled to Bissau in search of another three points against a side that also won at Estadio 24 de Setembro.
Eric Celle made three changes to his starting lineup for this game, as Bright Osayi-Samuel, Frank Onyeka, and Taiwo Awoniyi were introduced in place of Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze, and George Ilenikhena, respectively.
Just moments after Ademola Lookman tested the opposition goalkeeper from an Alex Iwobi pass, the hosts took the lead. A long ball from Renato Nhaga found winger Franculino Dju, who made his way into the box before curling an effort past Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.
The three-time African champions struggled on the difficult playing surface and in the hot weather conditions at the match venue. On the other hand, the hosts continued to enjoy the left side of the Eagles’ defence. Guinea-Bissau took the lead into the break.
After the interval, Nigeria missed a couple of chances through Akor Adams and Moses Simon to get themselves back into the game. Just minutes after the hour mark, the hosts doubled their lead through Mama Balde.
Despite several changes by Chelle to salvage something from the game, the Super Eagles conceded once more in stoppage time to lose to the Wild Dogs again, just like they did during the AFCON qualifiers in 2023.
In the other group game of matchday two, Madagascar and Tanzania played out a 1-1 draw.
When the qualifiers resume later in November, Nigeria will face Tanzania in the double-header, as Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau go head-to-head.
