Ivory Coast international Georges Henri Aboubakar Griffiths, who was plying his trade at Hungary side Diosgyor, was shot and killed in Abidjan on Thursday night by armed robbers who carted away with the striker’s Mercedes-Benz ML, according to a police report.

Son of former Asec Mimosas star player Aboubakar Griffiths, the 27-year-old was leaving the home of a female friend when two armed men approached him demanding the key of his 4W drive, the report mentioned.

One of the assailants opened fired at the player when he declined to surrender the key.
The former ASI Abengourou (Ivorian club) centre forward was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead moments later.

Aboubakar, as he was popularly known, had a brief spell in Czech Republic before joining Diosgyor in Hungary.
He initially played with Ivory Coast U23 outfit before kicking off a professional career.
