Nigeria Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has named Calvin Bassey as the best centre-back at the ongoing AFCON in Morocco, www.aclsports.com reports.
Although Nigeria were beaten by hosts Morocco on penalties in Wednesday night’s second semifinal, the 26-year-old stood out with a rock-solid defensive performance that drew plaudits from all quarters.
Speaking ahead of the third-place match between Nigeria and Egypt, the Malian tactician was full of praise for the Fulham defender for his strong performances at the tournament in Morocco.
”Since last January, Calvin has been the player who has played the most. He improved every game in one year, and he was better than in the last game,” Chelle said in his response to our football writer’s question.
”This AFCON is crazy, and he did a great job. For me, if I have to choose the best centre-back in the AFCON, I will say Calvin Bassey,” Chelle disclosed.
”So, we have a dream together. Every game, he[Bassey] has to improve, even when he plays for Fulham and Nigeria. I want him at the end of next season to be the third centre-back in the world.
”He tried every day to improve, not only on the pitch but also to become a leader in the group. I am pleased. We have some young players, and he has done well to take care of them. This is not easy, but after every game, you have to be the best,” Chelle concluded.
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will be without Calvin Bassey for Saturday’s third-place playoff against the Pharaohs of Egypt, as the defender is suspended. The match will take place at the Mohammed V Stadium in Casablanca, with kick-off scheduled for 5pm local time (same as Nigerian time).
